Scholarship Opportunities for NYC Public School students!


Reginald F. Lewis Foundation Scholarship 2012  2013

 

The Fund for Public Schools and the Reginald F. Lewis Foundation are pleased to invite applications for the Reginald F. Lewis Foundation Scholarship, which will award college scholarships to outstanding public high school seniors. It was proposed by Mrs. Loida Lewis, wife of the late business leader Reginald F. Lewis, to be a celebration of Mr. Lewis’ life and entrepreneurial spirit, and to provide meaningful support to students who embody Mr. Lewis’ commitment to getting ahead through education. The Reginald F. Lewis Foundation Scholarship will select promising New York City high school seniors who have demonstrated the following:

  • academic achievement
  • financial need
  • interest in business

 

Five winners will be chosen, and each will receive a $5,000 scholarship administered directly to the postsecondary institution in which they enroll. Winners will be invited to attend an award reception hosted by the Reginald F. Lewis Foundation on January 18, 2013.     

           

Selection Criteria


Seniors at public high schools throughout New York City are eligible to apply, especially those considering a career in business and/or law. Specific qualifying criteria include:

 

  1.  Academic achievement, as demonstrated by a cumulative average of 80% or better throughout 9-12th grade of high school.

  2.  Communication excellence, including strong writing skills as demonstrated by an essay of approximately 1,000 words which responds to the following:


Reginald F. Lewis was a successful African-American lawyer, entrepreneur and philanthropist whose persistence, hard work and imagination led to extraordinary academic and business achievements.  As you prepare to enter college and the world of work, what can you take from Mr. Lewis’ life as inspiration and motivation to set high goals for yourself?

 

Applicants are encouraged to read Mr. Lewis’ biography, “Why Should White Guys Have All the Fun? How Reginald Lewis Created a Billion-Dollar Business Empire” by Reginald F. Lewis and Blair S. Walker to assist in writing the essay. A copy of the book can be retrieved from certain schools' college advisor and/or librarian. The list of schools who have the book is included below.

 

  3.  Financial need, as indicated on FAFSA, 2011 IRS documents or eligibility for free and reduced priced meals.

  4.  Interest in business, as demonstrated by an expressed desire to enter the business world in their application essay.
