There is nothing as essential as reading, and there are few academic deficiencies as crippling as illiteracy. While it’s no surprise that deficient readers are far more likely than skilled readers to drop out of high school, you may be shocked to learn that one in five U.S. workers read at a lower skill level than their job requires. We must ensure that New York City’s students are not only learning to read, but learning to love reading, for the sake of our city and our nation.
